What is a podcast and why would I create one?
As the term “podcast” gets increasingly buzzy, it seems to be increasingly used to refer to all kinds of things. In basic terms, a podcast is recorded spoken-word audio created for distribution. It can take lots of different forms: monologue, interview, documentary.
Video podcasts exist, too, and we can support you in developing them, but these resources focus on audio production and distribution.
Podcasts are easily accessible for anyone with an internet connection and typically offered for free, which makes them particularly popular for mobilizing knowledge. While most listeners use a smartphone, they can also be accessed via desktop computer or downloaded to a media player. They’re also relatively easy to make with only a very small investment in equipment (if a large investment in time). This makes them a low-barrier medium for both creators and consumers.
Keep in mind, there are lots of great use of audio — including some classroom assignments — that aren’t strictly podcasts.
